Online, remote and electronic notary bonds

Forty-seven states and the District of Columbia now authorize some form of remote or electronic notarization. Most cover it under the standard notary bond. A handful require a second, larger bond, and two require errors and omissions insurance as well. Those bonds are individually underwritten; we quote them the same business day.

Every other jurisdiction that authorizes remote online notarization (Texas, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Washington, Michigan, Tennessee, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Indiana, Idaho, Missouri, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Dakota, Kentucky, Arkansas, Alaska, Hawaii, Wisconsin, D.C. and the states that require no bond at all) covers remote acts under the standard commission bond. For those states, order the standard bond from the state schedule; you will register separately with your commissioning authority as a remote or electronic notary, but you do not need a second bond.

Why remote notary bonds are underwritten individually

A remote online notarization takes place with the signer in a different location, often a different state or country, identified through credential analysis and knowledge-based authentication rather than in person. The penalties are higher (Illinois's $30,000 is the largest notary bond in the country) and the bond forms differ from the standard forms. We review each remote notary application, confirm the obligee's current form and penalty, and quote a firm price. No premium or fee is due until you accept the quotation.

How to request an online notary bond

  1. Tell us the commission. Jurisdiction, commission type (remote online, electronic, eNotary), the bond amount required if you know it, and the date you need it. Online below or on the paper quote request.
  2. Receive the quotation. Usually the same business day, from an underwriter, with the bond form your state requires attached.
  3. Accept and pay. We send a secure payment link; the executed bond follows by email.

Utah remote notaries

Utah is the one state where the remote bond is small enough to be rated as a class: the standard $5,000 bond plus an additional $5,000 rider, $10,000 in all, for $110. It is available on the standard online application; choose Utah and then Remote notary.

Questions

Do I need a separate bond to be a remote online notary?

Only in Arizona, Illinois, Florida, California (pending implementation) and Utah. Every other state that authorizes remote notarization covers it under the standard commission bond, although you must still register as a remote or electronic notary with your commissioning authority.

Is Notary E&O required for remote notaries?

In Florida ($25,000) and Montana ($25,000), yes. Everywhere else it is optional, and strongly advisable, because remote notarizations involve higher-value documents and signers you never meet in person.

How long does an underwritten notary bond take?

Quotations usually go out the same business day. Once accepted and paid, the executed bond is emailed the same or next business day.

Does an enlarged remote notary bond replace the standard bond?

It depends on the state. Illinois allows a single $30,000 bond covering all acts. Arizona requires the $25,000 remote bond in addition to the $5,000 traditional bond. Utah adds a $5,000 rider to the standard bond. Your quotation states exactly what is being issued.
